Choose a Flattering Silhouette

I don’t know about you, but when I was pregnant I often felt like clothes didn’t fit me quite right and nothing felt comfortable. I want you to feel and look your best for your maternity photos so first and foremost my top tip is to choose a silhouette that is flattering and comfortable! This could mean choosing a long, flowy dress that delicately skims the ground. Or, this could mean wearing a midi dress with a fitted top and sleeves that daintily hang off your shoulders. Or, maybe you prefer a tight and fitted dress to really show off your beautiful bump. There are so many silhouettes and dresses to choose from, so find something that makes you feel as stunning as you are!

Choose a Color that Won’t Hide Your Bump

Maternity sessions are the perfect way to document your beautiful belly, so with that in mind I urge you to avoid wearing dark colors. Chances are that if you have decided to partner with me you gravitate toward a light and airy style. But if not, let me tell you why it’s best to avoid dark colors! Colors such as black, dark blue, etc. will hide you bump and make it hard to see – which isn’t really what we are aiming for! Instead, light colors such as creams and pastels are always flattering and photograph beautifully.

Incorporating Patterns and Texture

Solid colors are always a great choice for photos, but I love when clients incorporate a pattern or texture into their wardrobe as well! When looking to choose a pattern for your photos I’d recommend that you be careful to select the right one. It’s very easy for a pattern to be too busy or too bold, which might result in a different look than you were hoping for! To avoid this, I’d recommend looking for patterns that are simple and not too distracting. Medium-sized patterns tend to photograph best. Additionally, you want to make sure that the colors within the patterns are subtle and go well together.

In addition to pattern, I love when texture is incorporated into a client’s wardrobe! Texture is a great way to create depth and interest to your photos in a delicate way. Textures such as lace, gauze, crepe, and swiss dot tend to photograph beautifully. Additionally, flowy fabrics such as chiffon create a very elegant and romantic look perfect for maternity photos!
