Wardrobe Guide for Spring Family Photos | Chicago Family Photographer

Although we never know what to expect with Chicago’s unpredictable weather, but March 19th means that it is officially spring and that means that it is the season for spring family photos! I know that so many of my clients stress over what they should wear for their family portraits and coordinating outfits for multiple family members can seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be!

The right outfit can make your family photos look classic and timeless, but you don’t need to feel pressured to buy an entirely new wardrobe for your session! I am sure that you already have some amazing wardrobe options in your closet. However, if you are feeling daunted by the prospect of what pieces to pair for your family photos don’t fret! Today I am sharing with you some of my favorite outfit choices for warm spring photo sessions as well as my top tips to help you choose the perfect wardrobe for all of your family members!

Coordinate

Consider your family’s outfits grouped together and look to see that the color palette is cohesive, not matchy-matchy. Neutrals are always best – think creams, whites, grays. If you’d like to add in a color pop then I would suggest pastels such as dusty rose, light blue, or sage, all of which look beautiful with spring blooms.

Patterns

Patterns are a great way to incorporate your personal style, however I would recommend avoiding any patterns that are too bold so that your photos don’t look too busy. If you would like to add a pattern, I would suggest adding pattern only to one or two people in your group. A floral dress or tiny polka dots are soft patterns that always photograph beautifully!

Layers

Layering is a great way to add texture, depth, and visual interest to your family portraits and keep your family comfortable with early spring’s chillier temperatures. Similar to my suggestion with patterns, try to incorporate layers with only a few members of your family in order to keep things simple and clean. A few easy ways to add layers are with blazers or cardigans.

If you still aren’t sure about how to dress your family for your upcoming photos I’ve included a few examples below to help inspire you. And as always, I’m here to help! I will be hosting spring mini sessions on May 2nd and would love to have your family there!
